The history of the ‘best little big town on earth’, is deep-rooted and impressive. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1877 and likely had no idea that this unassuming corner of Lulu Island would eventually become the ‘salmon capital of the world’. Upon their arrival, Manoah Steves and his family paid a whopping 75 cents per acre! By the turn of the century, the commercial fishing industry out of Steveston was in full swing with over 14 canneries operating on the river. By 1941, Steveston was the largest settlement in Richmond with approximately 4,000 people. The success of the fishing industry carried through to the mid 1970s when the focus of this small town began to switch from commercial fishing to residential and commercial development. The potential of this area was becoming well-recognized as the economic base of the town quickly changed from solely fishing to a combination of fishing and tourism.
Today, Steveston Village is an ideal balance of picturesque residential living, quaint collections of shops, commercial fishing and vibrant history. Residential living opportunities in the area are diverse and offer a spectacular array of amenities. The village centre offers-mixed use condos that come in a variety of sizes and ages. Most of these condos are located above commercial shops and have direct access to everything the Village has to offer. As you get further away from the main street (Moncton St), buyers can find small single family residential on 33’ lots (with some exceptions) and mature townhomes. Because of its obvious appeal as a highly livable community, prices in the Village tend to be higher than areas further out.
